Chế tạo Diclomêtan

Trong công nghiệp, người ta tổng hợp diclomêtan bằng cách cho mêtyl clorua hay mêtan phản ứng với khí clo trong khoảng 400–500 °C. Tại nhiệt độ này, cả hai chất mêtyl clorua và mêtan tham gia một loạt phản ứng như dưới đây.

CH4 + Cl2 → CH3Cl + HClCH3Cl + Cl2 → CH2Cl2 + HClCH2Cl2 + Cl2 → CHCl3 + HClCHCl3 + Cl2 → CCl4 + HCl

Hỗn hợp sau phản ứng gồm mêtyl clorua, diclomêtan, clorofom, và cácbon têtraclorua, chúng được phân tách qua quá trình chưng cất.
